How Did You Celebrate National Pig Day?

How did you spend National Pig Day with your pot belly pig?

National Pig Day was March 1st, it has been celebrated every March 1st since 1972.

The holiday was started by a North Carolina woman, Mary Lynne Rave, and her sister Ellen Stanley of Texas. In 1980 the ladies explained to the Virgin Islands Daily News that the idea behind the holiday is “to accord to the pig its rightful, though generally unrecognized, place as one of man’s most intellectual and domesticated animals.”

According to the brief, celebrations were held in which pink pig punch was served and pink ribbon pigtails were tied around trees to honor the pigs.

This year, according to the LA Times, a pre-pig day party was held the Friday Feb. 26, by the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The group invited the public to make a giant fruit salad for three pot belly pigs at a local shelter.

If you missed National Pig Day this year, why not make your own fruit dish for adoptable pot belly pigs at your local shelter? Popular National Pig Day activities also include, pigging out on your favorite foods, baking pig cookies or cupcakes and watching Charlotte’s Web or Babe on DVD.
