Creating the Right Toilet For Your Potbelly Pig

You went out and bought the right food, toys, and bedding for your potbelly piglet and so you think you are done. Wait a minute! Your potbelly pig needs a proper place to use the bathroom.  If you think you are just going to let your potbelly pig outside to use the bathroom and wait for it to return afterward, then you are mistaken. It is not a dog. Here are a few items your piggy can use when it has to, um, go.

  • Your potbelly pig can use a litter box that is shallow. This is ideal because potbelly pigs do not have long legs, so they need to climb into it without getting hurt. Also make sure the litter box is long. You don’t want you pig to miss!
  • You can use a kids swimming pool for your potbelly pig. Make sure it is shallow enough for your pig to enter easily or cut a “doorway” large enough for your piggy to enter and exit without hurting itself.
  • Your potbelly pig can use a SUV cargo tray. These trays are shallow and large enough to fit most adult potbelly pigs. You can use this for your potbelly piglet now and still be able to use it when your potbelly becomes bigger.

You can fill your potbelly pig’s toilet with newspaper or wood chips. If you want to use sand or soil just remember that this can become messy.

Now if you want to train your potbelly pig to use the bathroom outside, then you need to stay with it while it goes outside. Never leave your potbelly pig unattended outside since it is a likely target for other wild and domesticated animals.

When you take your potbelly pig outside make sure it is in an harness unless you have a fenced in area. When using a harness make sure it is made out of cotton or other soft materials. You do not want to cause sores on your pig. If you have an enclosed area examine it to make sure there are no structural weaknesses that will allow animals in to your yard or will allow your pig to leave it.
